What should I do if the oil cylinder is leaking?

Date:2025-11-11

Hello everyone! I am an ordinary technician at Youjiaxin. However, I have encountered countless oil cylinder leakage issues. In the beginning, I basically spent every night repairing oil cylinders, which led me to take many detours—and the company also went through a lot of unnecessary troubles. Below, I would like to share how to solve the problem if hydraulic oil cylinder leakage occurs.

Fault Phenomenon:

Compared with other hydraulic system faults, the problem encountered by this user is relatively simple: the hydraulic oil cylinder of their equipment is leaking. Since the equipment has been in use for 8 years, the seals of the hydraulic oil cylinder on this equipment may have been damaged, or the inner wall of the steel pipe may have been worn—either of these issues could cause the hydraulic oil cylinder to leak.

Fault Handling Process:

1. Based on the observed phenomenon and combined with previous experience, the user first needed to replace the seals of the hydraulic cylinder. This temporarily resolved the problem, but the leak reappeared after a short period of use.

2. After analyzing the root cause, it was found that the problem did not lie with the piston of the hydraulic cylinder, but rather with the seal at the end of the hydraulic cylinder.

3. A detailed inspection revealed that the sealing surface of the guide sleeve had numerous pitting marks and scratches caused by wear. These defects increased the sealing gap between the guide sleeve and the piston rod, making it unable to play a pressure-reducing role. As a result, the high-pressure oil inside the hydraulic cylinder directly impacted the primary and secondary seals. It is easy to imagine that under the action of high-pressure oil, the seals were damaged in a very short time, which is why the oil leakage occurred repeatedly.

Summary:

The interior of a hydraulic oil cylinder is equipped with various precision components, including more than a dozen seals of different sizes. Even a single seal with an improper size can lead to oil leakage after a period of use. Additionally, the degree of wear on the inner wall of the steel pipe also has a significant impact on oil cylinder leakage. For example, if the piston seal is worn, the steel part of the piston will directly come into contact with the inner wall, causing severe scratches on the inner wall. During use, this may also lead to the bending of the shaft.

After sharing all this information, you, as an experienced technician, should understand, right? Let’s do the math: How many days did it take you to repair this oil cylinder? Moreover, how long was the production line shut down, and how much output was lost due to this? Therefore, I still recommend that when an oil cylinder fails, you should immediately contact the hydraulic oil cylinder manufacturer to quickly discuss repair or replacement options. This way, the company’s production output will not be delayed.
